Mabel Fairfax Karl (1901 - 1990) was a sculptor, etcher and printmaker. She was born in Glendale, Oregon on June 27th. 1901. as Mabel Smith, who studied at the Art Students League of New York City with Leo Lentelli and Joseph Pennell, amongst others. By 1919, she had settled in San Diego and established a studio on Point Loma and, seven years later, she studied bronze casting with Archibald Dawson at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. About 1927, she married Fred Karl and, after that time, she was active in both San Diego and Houston, Texas until the early 1940s. Mrs. Karl died in San Diego on November 14th. 1990. She was a member of the San Diego Fine Art Society, the American Federation of Arts and the Southern States Art League. She exhibited and received prizes, at the San Diego Fine Art Gallery from 1927 - 1935 and Houston Museum in 1932,1934 and 1935 and the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. She is in the collections of Wilson High School, San Diego, the Houston Museum, The San Diego Museum and Associated American Artists, 1939 and Who's Who In American Art 1936 - 1941.
